清代徐印川，在书法方面很有造诣。光绪年间曾任贵州提督，其提督府就在安顺北街。
徐印川久闻辖境有一红岩碑，出处来历未有定论。光绪三十一年的一日，他巡查至附近，遂前往观看。岭陡林密，同行随从十余人仅能步行。到得崖下，观之绝壁十余丈，岩石浅红，崖底触手可及之处书写有似字似画的碑文，尤为壮观，同行者均未能识。
徐印川观之良久，方才顿悟：碑中间十一个字岂不是生肖动物，独缺一“虎”。
徐印川看到，此为千古一谜，终为被其猜出，欣喜异常。当下唤随从师爷取来批注用的红笔，书写下一草书的“虎”字，补齐了左侧的缺口处。
随行之人只看到徐提督书写了一个“虎”字，并没有人理解他为什么这么写。直到今天提到这个“虎”字，所有人都颇有微词。
