光绪二十七年，张兴旺兄弟二人因世代为石灰匠，受雇于民团前往安顺深山拓取红岩碑。同行民团二十余人。到得红岩下抬头望崖高有三丈，崖壁上的碑文是红笔所写，并不是刻画的，所以不能抹色拓印。
碑文字体大小不一，印迹有深有浅，往往一个大字旁画了几个同样的小字，像是在临摹大字。全然不像是一个时期所写，实在不知临摹此碑有什么意义。
张氏弟兄此来的任务是将用桐油把石灰浆涂抹到红色碑文之上，等待其凝固之后再行锤拓。他们一行拓取倒也十分顺利，不到一天便完成工作。
谁料想不足一个月，乡绅纷纷上访，要告发罗团练毁坏古迹的罪行。
张氏兄弟无奈又被雇请，同那二十余团练忙活三天，用斧劈刀凿，沸水洗涤，方才将敷在碑文上面的石灰浆铲除干净。完工后回看，岩壁上的红色碑文多半已经跟灰浆一起剥落，再也难以辨别字迹了。
