张氏弟兄此来的任务是将用桐油把石灰浆涂抹到红色碑文之上，等待其凝固之后再行锤拓。他们一行拓取倒也十分顺利，不到一天便完成工作。
谁料想不足一个月，乡绅纷纷上访，要告发罗团练毁坏古迹的罪行。
张氏兄弟无奈又被雇请，同那二十余团练忙活三天，用斧劈刀凿，沸水洗涤，方才将敷在碑文上面的石灰浆铲除干净。完工后回看，岩壁上的红色碑文多半已经跟灰浆一起剥落，再也难以辨别字迹了。
